2009-10 Season Review
Despite being bit of a rush job, I hope those that saw the Season Review video at the Club Award Night on Friday enjoyed it.
I've been asked if it will be out on DVD and yes it will be available, I've just normalized the sound track (equalled out the volume of the various tracks) and removed the false ending (I left in an original credit on one of the goal clips).
UPDATE: now available to order on-line here, a snip at £2.50.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks for the generous applause and for the VPs for awarding me the Don Hartwell Award, which I felt honoured to receive.
I must yet again thank those that have been involved with Brakes Videos in its various guises over the years, especially Paul Edwards for all the highlight edits he has done from the whole matches.
P.S. there will be a DVD of Josh Blake's goals together with highlights of the Testimonial Match - as well as a multi-DVD Highlights set for the 2009-10 Season.
Thanks and c'mon you Brakes.
Nick Rogers.

New Blood needed for next season
Due to the difficulty of balancing work, home, Brakes Videos, Brakes Trust and other activities - I've decided to stand down from videoing and editing the matches from next season, but I hope there will be volunteers out there to carry on.
If there is anyone interested then please contact me, I'd be only too happy to advise, help you getting started and stand in on the videoing from time to time.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped and supported Brakes Videos - with special thanks to Paul Edwards for his great work in producing the edited highlights.

200 length swim for a good cause
My daughter is entering the 2010 Swimathon, which is a nationwide fund raising event in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
She's going to try for the longest swim on the challenge - 5Km, that's 200 lengths of the swimming pool.
Even if I only get one sponsor from this post then it will be a result.
You can sponsor her here...
Here's her message:
Hey guys, I've taken on the challenge of swimming further than I ever have before - and all in aid of a very good cause. Marie Curie Cancer Care makes a difference to the lives of thousands of terminally ill people by providing free care from Marie Curie Nurses. If you would be generous enough to sponsor me - however much you can spare, I would really appreciate it! Cheers, and wish me luck! Heather :-)
Update - 10:00 pm Sat 17th: 200 lengths done in 1 hour 51 mins.

Marie Curie Cancer Care makes a difference to the lives of thousands of terminally ill people by providing free care from Marie Curie Nurses when it is needed most. On the 17th I put in my all and swam the 5k in under 2 hours yippee! Thanks so much to everyone who sponsored me and gave me their support and best wishes :-) With the online and paper pledges combined we've met and exceeded my £500 target hooray! Thanks again, Heather :-)

Brum Snr Cup @ Nuneaton Town
The wonky camera angle was due to leaning the tripod forward in order to see the corner flag past the sticky-out bits of scaffolding on Boro's scaffold tower - if I get to use it again I'll take some bungees to lash the tripod further forward.
1-0:
2-0 (pure comedy):
But that's about as good as it got - for more "highlights" see the Whole Match or Monthly Highlights DVDs.

Why don't you upload opposition's goals?
I upload our goals for our fans, that takes a fair bit of time as it is, anything else you'll have to satisfy your curiosity with the DVDs. Meanwhile I've always provided DVDs and private uploads for the management when asked.
I wouldn't want to put up all the goals and incidents it would take too much time and might be also be beneficial to upcoming opponents - some would say putting our goals on-line does that already - but I'll be guided by our management and webmasters on that.
In fact I'm always wary of providing whole match DVDs further afield (except for the occasional request from refs), but I don't have a problem once we've played both fixtures or the next fixture is well into the future, and it's only fair to thank hospitality at away games with the offer of one with that proviso.
So the upshot is, if you want to see more than the relatively low quality uploads already on You Tube then please feel free to buy a whole match DVD - these are much better quality video, and can be played on your big screen TV while sitting on your own comfy sofa and supping an appropriate beverage.
All net proceeds go towards improving the experience for all fans who watch the Brakes.

Good old Pathe News
61 years ago today saw the biggest giant killing in the FA Cup, after disposing of 2nd division Bury in the 3rd round, Yeovil played Sunderland, who were in the top six of the First Division. The Rokerites were the biggest spenders of the day, having signed top England International Len Shackleton with a shed load of cash, earning them the nick-name - "The Bank of England Team".
Seb White's article for the BBC.
CiderSpace history
Sunderland had bit of a dip in form after that and lost their next four league games.
Yeovil drew away to Manchester Utd in the next round, who were playing at Maine Road due to Old Trafford having not returned to normal use after the war.
By this time my dad had been called up for his National Service and was at Didsbury telling all the Mancs to watch out as Alec Stock's boys were coming to get them.
In the end, with their 'keeper injured early on and no subs in those days, the Glovers were soundly beaten 8-0 (a familiar margin), but yet another FA Cup record was broken and still stands to this day - it was the biggest FA Cup crowd outside of the Final ever - 81,565 surpassed the expected 55-60,000, and not all of them were local!
Ulnike other one-hit wonders, Yeovil's FA Cup exploits show that they deserve the title of giant-killers, in their non-league days the Glovers knocked out 20 League teams.
However now the boot is on the other foot they've been knocked out themselves by a few non-league teams in recent years - the giant-killers being "giant-killed" themselves.
Ah the FA Cup, there's nothing quite like it.
"Giants" killed:
1924/25 Bournemouth & Boscombe
1934/35 Crystal Palace
1934/35 Exeter City
1938/39 Brighton & Hove Albion

1948/49 Sunderland
1958/59 Southend United
1960/61 Walsall
1963/64 Southend United
1963/64 Crystal Palace
1970/71 Bournemouth & Boscombe
1972/73 Brentford
1987/88 Cambridge United
1991/92 Walsall

1992/93 Hereford United
1993/94 Fulham
1998/99 Northampton Town
2000/01 Colchester United
2000/01 Blackpool
Not to mention several near misses, and replays, and a few since winning promotion to the football league on merit.
